U15s lose final League Game to Romsey
By Heloise Fella
Depleted squad find it tough against a well drilled Romsey side.
Our final league game was against a strong Romsey side, who had only lost to Havant and Fordingbridge. Despite having 19 players on our books only 13 turned up, mainly due to injury and for reasons unknown. Romsey loaned us a player and the first half commenced with 15 players against our 13+1. I’ll let Jack explain that one!
Despite a bright start and making some good yards through Dom our support was distinctly lacking and we were turned over. From this turn over Romsey played solid, simple rugby and were able to score under the posts. The next 15mins could be summed up by lack of support and poor first line defence. This period saw Romsey run in several tries and the game was forfeited before 20 mins were up.
This was extremely disappointing and could have been worse if it wasn’t for a couple of try saving tackles from Josh. There were mitigating circumstances; the very strong wind was against us, we had one less player (speak to Jack) and we were missing a large number of our experienced players. We did have some good moments through Dom, Josh and Jayden but every time we made some progress we were turned over. Romsey were quick at the breakdown and we simply didn’t have any numbers to protect the ball.
After the game had been declared lost we somehow started playing better and only allowed one more try in the first half. We didn’t get on the scoreboard before the break but at least it wasn’t one-way traffic. We also lost Josh who had aggravated his shoulder and it was decided that he should rest so as to not exacerbate the injury.
After the break, with the wind at our backs and even sides it was a better performance. We still gave the ball away too easily but at least there was some spirited defence from the likes of Zack, Dom, Jayden and Isaac. Our scrum was pretty solid and when the ball was moved to Isaac by Jake, Isaac did a great job in getting the ball out to the centres, Fin and Jayden, putting Heathens on the front foot. Considering his 8 month absence from rugby we all though he did a fantastic job. Unfortunately Romsey were well organised in defence and even though we managed to move the ball to Daniel and Tristan out on the wings we couldn’t find space to get round the opposition.
We did secure a few rucks with Xander now getting stuck in and unlike earlier in the season when we would lose ball in the contact, all our forwards were carrying better with Toby and Brian both driving into the opposition and recycling the ball. Our three tries came from the props. Two from Dom, who made the most yards for us today and one from Lewis who stormed over from 1 metre after another break from Dom. Dom converted both his efforts and for a bit of fun Lewis was given the chance to convert his. If points were awarded for how far under the bar you could get then Lewis would have got the max! Oh well, put a smile on our faces though :-) The second half score was 26-19 to Romsey so not a bad effort considering the players we were missing.
Despite the result it was good to see Heathens stick at it all the way to the end. We are still waiting for this 60 min performance and maybe we will see it in the Cup competition that we now go into. Strangely enough, losing today gives us an easier route to the Plate Final. Quarter Final up next on the 17th Feb. Hopefully we will have a few more players available and we can win to go onto the Semi Final.
Two weeks of training next, we need maximum attendance to work on the shortcomings identified. Please can I ask that you let us know when the lads cannot attend. It really does help with the planning. Well done to Dom who was voted Player of the Match by Romsey, which was thoroughly deserved.
