It is so good to have another team come up with such a fair Match Report that I thought I would add it to our website as well and thanks to Romsey for a well contested game..
Romsey 9 - Fareham Heathens 10
Missed opportunities and broken hearts!
A dramatic finish put an end to a long awaited Romsey home win. In the final minutes of this tense game, the Fareham Heathens fly half kicked a tremendous drop goal to steal the win and break Romsey hearts on valentine’s weekend.
The weather conditions were superb for a game of running rugby but the early stages of this game resembled a dog fight. Fareham Heathens came hard at Romsey from the start and surprised them with their intensity. After soaking up 10 minutes of early pressure, Romsey gradually crept into the Fareham Heathens half where they spent a vast majority of the first half. Early stages suggested that Fareham Heathens were dominating the scrum and putting a lot of pressure on number eight Surgison and this resulted in slow ball for the backs to play with. Romsey did take the lead through two penalty kicks, which Campbell-Smith put over with ease. The winger then made a mazy break, cutting through the defence but was halted short of the line. Romsey did eventually cross the line with a driving maul but the referee deemed the ball was held up. Numerous attacks amounted to nothing with the last pass often not going to hand. Centres Lust and Stoddart made a couple of half breaks but the overlap created was often wasted, a problem that Romsey have often had this season.
Romsey’s coach, Gary Banks, demanded a higher tempo for the second half as the home side tried to pull clear of Heathens. Stoddart was reverted back to his natural position of scrum half and the mercurial Stent was put in the centre. There was certainly no lack of commitment from either team as they both continued to bash chucks out of each other. Fareham used their advantage in the scrum well, first spoiling Romsey’s attacking ball and then using it as a base from which to attack. A deep kick into Romsey territory caused trouble and a Romsey player went down injured near the try line. Play was stopped to treat the player and this resulted in a Romsey scrum, 5 metres from their own line. Intense pressure was put on Romsey’s front row and the ball squirted out the back. A Fareham player reacted first and touched down for a try. The conversion was added to take Fareham into the lead. Romsey tried to strike back and kept things tight, running directly using their mobile pack. Although Francis was having a tough day in the scrum he was getting around the park securing the ball due to his expertise as a flanker. Romsey regained the lead with another penalty from in front of the posts. During the last minutes of the game the Romsey’s players became nervous as the Fareham players seek a winning score. After one missed penalty chance, their fly half dropped the goal to win the game, which Romsey players have no complaints about. As a dejected Romsey team left the field, the Evergreen fullback Trentham said, “Not in all my years of playing have I ever seen such a wonderfully struck drop goal to win the game”.
